Course Information
The qualification is primarily for those who have a responsibility at work or are involved in voluntary and community activities having access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) but teaches valuable skills that will benefit everyone.
You will gain the knowledge and practical competence required to be able to recognise and treat adults, children and infants who have suffered cardiac arrest and to respond quickly, calmly, and confidently.
AEDs are widely available in public areas and workplaces and the survival rate for casualties suffering cardiac arrest dramatically increases if an AED is available and there are qualified personnel to use it.
Course Content
A range of subjects are covered including:
- Conduct a scene survey
- Conduct a primary survey on an adult, child and infant
- Summon appropriate assistance when necessary
- Identify when to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Demonstrate CPR using an adult, child, and infant manikin
- Identify other considerations when administering CPR and using an AED
- Identify when to place a casualty into the recovery position
- Demonstrate how to place an adult, child and infant into the recovery position
- Demonstrate continual monitoring of breathing whilst the casualty is in the recovery position
Course Duration
A minimum of 4 contact hours in the classroom, consisting of practical and theoretical activities.
Certification
The qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.
Assessment
The qualification is assessed through practical demonstration. There is no grading of the assessment, learners pass or are referred.
